Article 17: Call-Back
- Call-Back Pay
- An Employee who is called back and required to return to work without undue delay during the on-call period shall not be paid for those hours worked during the on-call period in accordance with Article 16.02 but shall be paid for the hours worked during the on-call period in accordance with the call-back provisions of Article 17.
- When a call-back forms a continuous period with the Employee’s normal working hours, overtime rates shall apply only to those hours worked before the commencement of the regularly scheduled shift and the normal working hours shall not be reduced as a result of such call-back except by mutual consent.
- Full-Time Employees
- A Full-Time Employee who is called back and required to return to work outside of the Full-Time Employee’s regular hours shall be paid for any one (1) call at either:
- the overtime rate as specified in Article 15.01; or
- four (4) hours at the Basic Rate of Pay; whichever is greater.
- A Full-Time Employee who is called back to the work site shall be reimbursed for reasonable, necessary and substantiated transportation expenses and, if the Full-Time Employee travels for such purpose by private automobile, reimbursement shall be at the Alberta Government rate per kilometre from the Full-Time Employee’s residence to the work site and return, provided the return is prior to the commencement of the Employee’s next shift.
- A Full-Time Employee who is called back and required to return to work outside of the Full-Time Employee’s regular hours shall be paid for any one (1) call at either:
- Part-Time Employees
- A Part-Time Employee who has completed a shift and is called back and required to return to work outside the Part-Time Employee’s regular hours shall be paid for any one (1) call at either:
- the overtime rate as specified in Article 15.01; or
- four (4) hours at the Basic Rate of Pay; whichever is greater.
- A Part-Time Employee who has completed a shift and is called back and required to return to work shall be reimbursed for reasonable, necessary and substantiated transportation expenses and, if the Employee travels for such purpose by private automobile, reimbursement shall be at the Alberta Government rate per kilometre from the Part-Time Employee’s residence to the work site and return, provided the return is prior to the commencement of the Employee’s next shift. Such allowance will not be paid when reporting for additional hours of work pursuant to Article 14.
- A Part-Time Employee who has completed a shift and is called back and required to return to work outside the Part-Time Employee’s regular hours shall be paid for any one (1) call at either:

In the twelve (12) hour period immediately preceding an Employee’s next regularly scheduled shift an Employee:
- who works more than eight (8) hours pursuant to Article 17.02 or 17.03; or
- is called-back to work more than two times (2X);
shall be entitled to eight (8) consecutive hours rest before commencing their next scheduled shift, without loss of earnings.
- The Employee in the above situation will advise their Supervisor in advance of the fact that they will not be reporting for duty at their scheduled time.
- Due to operational circumstances where an Employee cannot be provided eight (8) consecutive hours of rest in accordance with Articl17.04(a), they shall be paid at two times (2X) their Basic Rate of Pay for all hours worked during what would have been the eight (8) hour rest period.
- This provision is waived if the Employee is granted a request for a shift exchange.
- Remote Consultation
When an Employee is consulted by telephone or by any form of electronic means and has been:- assigned on call duty and is authorized by the Employer to handle job-related matters without returning to the workplace, or
- authorized by the Employer to handle job-related matters without returning to the workplace
the Employee shall be paid at the applicable rate for the total accumulated time spent on consultation(s) and corresponding documentation during the on-call period. If the total accumulated time is less than thirty (30) minutes, the Employee shall be compensated at the applicable rate of pay for thirty (30) minutes.
