Article 24: In-Service Programs and Professional Development

- The Parties to this Collective Agreement recognize the value of continuing in-service education for Employees and that the responsibility for such continuing education lies not only with the Employer but also with the Employee. For the purpose of this Article, the term "in-service" includes: orientation, CPR training, acquisition and maintenance of essential skills, and other in-service sessions which may be offered by the Employer.
- The Employer reserves the right to identify specific in-service sessions as being compulsory for Employees and those required to attend such sessions shall be paid at the applicable rate of pay for attendance.
- The Employer shall provide a paid orientation period for all new Employees. The form and duration of such orientation shall be determined in consultation between the Employee and the Employer.
- Should the Employer direct an Employee to participate in a specific program, such Employee shall be compensated in accordance with the following:
- For program attendance on regularly scheduled working days, the Employee shall suffer no loss of regular earnings.
- For hours in attendance at such program on regularly scheduled days off, the Employee shall be paid at their basic rate of pay to a maximum of eight (8) hours per day.
- Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or re-certification shall be made available at no charge to those Employees who must maintain current CPR certification as a condition of employment. Employees who receive approval from the Employer to attend such sessions shall be paid at the applicable rate of pay.
- Professional Development Days
- Upon written request, each Full-time Employee shall be granted at least three (3) professional development days without pay annually.
