Standing in solidarity with Alberta teachers

On Monday, the Government of Alberta passed Bill 2 to strip away the charter-protected rights and freedoms of Alberta teachers. The government is using the notwithstanding clause for the first time in our province’s history in this way, to impose a settlement on teachers and strip away their right to bargain for better wages and working conditions until August 2028.

HSAA’s membership and leadership strongly supports teachers and denounces Bill 2.

We will not stand by while the rights of workers are under attack. We will take action.

Our Union is working closely with the Alberta Federation of Labour (AFL), members of the Common Front, and national partners such as the Canadian Labour Congress and NUPGE to explore options to challenge this unprecedented attack on fundamental rights and protect our members and all Albertans from this historic abuse of power.

HSAA will continue to participate in these conversations. At this time, HSAA will continue to use all legal steps to protect the rights and freedoms and the best interests of health-care professionals and all Albertans.

WHAT CAN I DO NOW?

There a several actions we can take right now to oppose Bill 2 and show solidarity:

  1. Text “RESIST” to 55255 to stay up-to-date with the broader labour movement.
  2. Join the ATA ‘Stop the Excuses’ campaign and email your MLA.
  3. Like and follow: AFL, Public Interest Alberta, Friends of Medicare, Support Our Students.
  4. If you live in Calgary Bow – sign the petition to recall the Education Minister.
  5. Add your name to the CUPE "Save the Charter" petition.
  6. Join and participate in any rallies or events to support our fellow Unions.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

The Board is continuing discussions over the coming days, carefully evaluating what comes next. We remain committed to keeping you informed and keeping members’ best interests at the centre of every decision we make.

In Solidarity,

HSAA
