EDMONTON – Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA) Vice-President Leanne Alfaro issued the following statement in response to the Government of Alberta’s introduction of Bill 2 as 22,000 health-care professionals resume bargaining in November:
“HSAA’s membership and leadership fully supports Alberta’s teachers and denounces Bill 2’s undemocratic removal of Albertans’ collective bargaining rights and freedoms. Our union will be exploring a wide range of tools to protect our members and all Albertans against this historic abuse of power.
“The government’s use of the notwithstanding clause sets a dangerous precedent that undermines the rights of all Albertans. For decades, strong Alberta unions have been instrumental in securing fair wages and safe working conditions across the province by exercising their rights. When these rights are attacked, every workplace in Alberta, both public and private, is weaker, including in education and health care.
“Our Board of Directors believes teachers deserve to be heard at the bargaining table, not silenced in the legislature. HSAA will support actions that protect the rights of Albertans to organize, collectively bargain, and if necessary, strike, to secure a better deal.
“HSAA members provide critical care to Albertans and their families each and every day. They understand what it means to fight for fair treatment, respect and a voice at the table.
“As we prepare to resume bargaining in November, we will continue to oppose any attempt to silence or override the rights of health-care professionals.”
