Executive Director

HSAA is seeking a knowledgeable and reputable professional with strong union values to lead the Union in its next chapter and play a key role in the continued implementation of the current strategic plan. Within this context HSAA invites applications and nominations for the position of Executive Director (ED).

The position:

Reporting to the Executive Officers and the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will lead the Union in its next chapter and play a key role in the continued implementation of the current strategic plan. Working closely with the Board of Directors, the Senior Management Team, staff, and membership, the ED will navigate the complexities of labour relations in Alberta’s healthcare sector. The ED will work to ensure that HSAA provides exemplary labour relations services, champions workers rights, and advocates for universal publicly funded healthcare to enhance the well-being of HSAAs member’s, the individuals they care for, and the communities they serve.

The ED will build strong, trusting, and collaborative working relationships with staff, Board Members and affiliates, and they will cultivate a professional, supportive and engaging workplace culture that promotes equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility and innovation. The ED will provide advice to the Executive Officers and the Board on operational strategies to achieve the goals of the strategic plan, as well as political strategies for action that affect HSAA members and healthcare. As the key operational leader, the ED will oversee the Union’s operations in accordance with the policies, strategic plan and operating budget established by the Board, and the Union’s values and mission. The ED will manage the Union’s resources relative to the provision of membership services including but not limited to negotiations, employer compliance with collective agreements, organizing of local units, membership disability claims, member education program, occupational health and safety, and member communications.

What you bring:

As the ideal candidate, you understand how to enable, empower, and transform organizations, and operationalize strategic initiatives. You have progressive experience in senior leadership roles, preferably within a union, not-for-profit, or similar mission driven organization. Candidates must have a commitment to publicly funded universal healthcare. You have a proven track record of operations experience, including budgeting. Experience working with and/or reporting to a Board of Directors is an asset. You demonstrate commitment to labour movement values, have deep knowledge of labour relations principles and practices, and are capable of championing HSAA’s core values and vision. You can navigate complex political environments, understand the dynamics around the relationship between employer bodies, government bodies, and the Union, and are comfortable advocating for and representing the interests of healthcare professionals. As a leader, you build and foster an open and collaborative workplace culture and have demonstrated experience promoting and advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. Your communication skills inspire trust, allowing you to build and sustain strong relationships with colleagues and allies at all levels and advance effective communication pathways. You are committed to the highest standards of honesty, transparency, and ethics. You have proven change management experience, with the ability to establish goals, develop implementation plans, monitor progress and ensure effective accountability and strategic alignment. A post-secondary degree is an asset.

Director of Engagement

HSAA is looking for a Director of Engagement who will be responsible for the mandate of membership engagement as identified in the HSAA strategic plan. This position requires strong leadership skills, strategic thinking, a deep understanding of member engagement principles and a strong grasp of union dynamics.

The position:

Are you an astute leader with a passion for engagement and strategic decision making? We’re looking for a Director of Engagement who will be responsible for the mandate of membership engagement as identified in the HSAA strategic plan through member engagement communications, education, and events. This position requires strong leadership, strategic thinking, a deep understanding of member engagement principles and union dynamics and making effective recommendations on a wide variety of topics to the Executive Director. The Director of Engagement is also integrally involved in all aspects of the planning, staffing, management, and policy development for the HSAA’s staff. The incumbent will be working out of our Edmonton Office.

You Will:

  • Oversee the development and implementation of strategies to enhance member engagement and participation in HSAA activities.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of strategies to support HSAA committees and working groups along with the services to support them.
  • Direct oversight of the Engagement, Communication, Events, and Education Departments, facilitating the development and implementation of member education and event strategies. Ensure alignment with member engagement initiatives and the overall strategic plan.
  • Provide guidance and support to the board in navigating and fulfilling their duties and governance responsibilities in alignment with the strategic plan.
  • Develop and revise governance policies and procedures to reflect best practices and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Develop and deliver comprehensive orientation programs for new board members to ensure a clear understanding of their roles, responsibilities, and governance obligations.
  • Facilitate ongoing training and development opportunities for board members to enhance.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive governance framework that interacts between the board of directors and operations and aligns with HSAA’s vision, mission, and values.
  • Supervise the staff assigned to the position, including an out-of-scope Manager, Education.

What You Bring:

  • A bachelor’s degree or certificate in Business Administration, Political Science, Labour Relations, or related field.
  • A minimum of six (6) years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • A deep understanding of strategic communications planning, including messaging, media relations, crisis communication, and social media strategy.
  • A strong understanding of labour union dynamics and familiarity with member engagement strategies, including organizing campaigns, mobilization efforts, and member education programs.
  • Strong knowledge of public relations principles, including media relations, stakeholder engagement, and reputation management.
  • Understanding of budgeting and financial management as it relates to communications and engagement initiatives.
  • A sound knowledge of governance and board functions, principles, best practices, and legal requirements within a labour union or non-profit organization.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement governance frameworks and policies.
  • Strong leadership and influence skills and the capacity to think strategically, develop long-term communication plans, and adapt strategies as needed.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage and build relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders, including union members, leadership, external stakeholders.
  • Exceptional organizational, analytical, problem-solving, project management and planning skills.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft clear and compelling messages for various audiences.

What You Bring:

  • Minimum of a certificate in Humanities or Social Sciences, Communications, or a related program.
  • Three years’ experience in digital campaigning and campaign organizing.
  • Strong background in campaign strategy, graphic design, and data-driven decision-making.

Administrative Assistant I (2 Full-time, Temporary)

The positions:

We are looking for two (2) full-time, temporary Administrative Assistant I, who will work out of the Edmonton office. One position will report to the General Manager, and one position will report to the Director, Negotiations and Policy. These are temporary positions for up to six (6) months, based on operational requirements. These in-scope positions are general administrative support positions and will provide administrative support and coverage across HSAA operations. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

General Administrative Support:

  • Supports Directors/Managers with operational priorities and projects.
  • Responsible for providing recommendations to enhance operations support and administrative procedures.
  • HSAA Members’ Benefits funds, bursary, discounts and awards program support: Responsible for managing the bursary application process, assisting members with applications, member correspondence, maintaining electronic records, maintaining accurate data in the database, reporting and metrics, and supporting the Members’ Benefits Committee.
  • HSAA Disability and Health, Safety & Wellness program support: Responsible for maintaining electronic files and records, supporting disability LROs, coordinating calendars and meeting requests, liaising with external vendors and partners, maintaining accurate data in the database, reporting and metrics, member support and correspondence, and supporting the Workplace Health, Safety & Wellness Committee and operations team.
  • Committee support: providing essential administrative assistance to committees, including preparing agendas, taking minutes, managing correspondence, and ensuring smooth meeting operations.
  • General office administration: Providing essential support for the smooth operation of the HSAA office, handling a wide range of tasks including meeting support, filing and records management, data entry, and assisting with various administrative duties.
  • Reception coverage: greeting members and guests, monitoring Visitor Log, answer general member questions, mail/courier services, maintains reception area and meeting rooms, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What you bring:

  • A post-secondary degree, diploma, or certificate in business administration or related program, and three (3) years’ experience in an administrative and/or customer service role. Equivalent education and work experience will be considered.
  • Energetic, self-motivated, and positive individual with the ability to support and work collaboratively with many different stakeholders, both internal and external to HSAA.
  • A service-oriented team player and have strong multi-tasking, time-management, and organization skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and provide information through your outstanding verbal and written communication.
  • Detail-oriented with strong time-management skills and work well under tight deadlines with competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Intermediate Proficiency with the MS Office Suite: Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel and PowerPoint are required.
  • Experience with databases and Foxit/Adobe would be an asset.
