The Position
HSAA is seeking a temporary full-time General Manager for an 18-month term to lead our administrative team through an exciting period of transition and growth. This leadership role oversees key programs, facilities, and organizational operations, ensuring smooth day-to-day functioning and strong support for our members and staff.
The General Manager leads a team of Administrative Assistants, providing direction, coordination, and support across a range of organizational programs — including merchandise, member benefits, special projects, and general office administration and reception. This role is responsible for developing and optimizing administrative systems to improve efficiency, communication, and collaboration throughout the organization. Acting as a central point of coordination, the General Manager ensures that staff have the tools, information, and resources they need to deliver exceptional service to members and stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to are:
- Leadership & Program Coordination
- Lead and support a team of Administrative Assistants to deliver high-quality administrative services across the organization.
- Oversee program coordination for merchandise, member benefits, and office administration and reception.
- Plan and manage administrative procedures, continuously identifying opportunities to streamline and improve processes.
- Manage budgets for multiple program areas, ensuring effective use of organizational resources.
- Facilities & Operations Management
- Oversee facilities operations for both the Edmonton and Calgary offices, ensuring a safe, clean, and professional work environment.
- Coordinate building maintenance, utilities, leases, and health and safety compliance.
- Liaise with service providers, contractors, and trades to support building upkeep and improvements.
- Manage vendor relationships, including negotiating and administering contracts for cleaning, security, and other office services.
- Insurance, Risk & Compliance
- Manage the organization’s commercial insurance portfolio, including property, liability, and member benefit programs.
- Monitor and mitigate operational risks through effective procedures and documentation.
- Oversees and manages the Emergency Response Plan (ERP) in collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure organizational preparedness and regulatory compliance.
- Merchandise Program Management
- Oversee HSAA’s merchandise store operations, including purchasing, inventory management, online sales, and reporting.
- Maintain accurate stock levels, coordinate shipping, and ensure timely order fulfillment.
The position works under high-pressure situations to provide timely and accurate advice on current projects and emerging issues. This role requires a high level of independence, agility, and problem-solving skills to address office and building matters and provide clear guidance to staff on actions to take to alleviate office and program operations. Project coordination, time management, active engagement, and collaboration with employees at all levels of the organization and other internal and external stakeholders are essential for this role.
What You Bring
You have a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Facilities Management, or a related discipline, along with 5 years of experience providing direct supervision to a team of administrative professionals. You bring a strong background in budget administration, facilities, operations, and program management. You are tech-savvy, with intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office programs, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams. The Position:
The Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA) is seeking a strategic, principled, and experienced Director, Negotiations to lead collective bargaining and labour relations initiatives across multiple bargaining tables. This senior leadership role will report to the Executive Director and is responsible for the planning and executing bargaining activities, including mandate development, proposal coordination, and the implementation of agreements while ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and member-focused outcomes.
Key responsibilities include, but not limited to:
- Strategic Negotiations & Labour Relations:
- Provide executive oversight for all phases of collective bargaining, ensuring alignment across agreements, adherence to mandates, and consistency in proposals, costing, and settlement recommendations.
- Offer expert guidance on the interpretation and application of collective agreements to support defensible, member-focused outcomes.
- Bargaining Preparation, Research, and Policy Development:
- Oversee the development of bargaining proposals and supporting research to ensure strategies are evidence-based, strategically aligned, and reflective of member priorities.
- Monitor sector trends, legislative developments, and emerging labour market issues to anticipate challenges and adjust strategies proactively.
- Labour Action & Strategic Mobilization:
- Lead strategic planning for strike readiness and job actions, ensuring members, staff, and bargaining teams are fully prepared for all phases of potential labour disruption.
- Direct the development, negotiation, and management of Essential Services Agreements (ESAs).
- Provide strategic direction for member mobilization and organizing initiatives, using data-driven insights to maximize participation, cohesion, and bargaining effectiveness.
- Stakeholder Engagement & Strategic Coordination:
- Build and maintain strategic relationships with employer representatives, internal departments, and union affiliates to support cohesive, member-focused bargaining strategies.
- Provide senior leadership with timely reporting on bargaining progress, risks, and emerging issues to inform organizational decision-making.
The position also provides guidance and mentorship to a multidisciplinary team of negotiators and functional specialists, fostering a collaborative, high-performance environment. This role will also oversee resource allocation, workload management, and professional development to ensure operational and strategic objectives are achieved.
What You Bring:

The successful candidate will also have a:
- University degree or diploma in Labour Relations, Human Resources, Employment or Labour Law, Health Care or Health Economics, or a related discipline, combined with a minimum of ten (10) years of progressive labour relations experience in a unionized environment and at least five (5) years of leadership or team-management experience; equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Familiarity with sector-specific issues, operational challenges, strategic human health resource planning, labour market dynamics, and emerging policy trends is considered an asset.
- Advance training and certifications in Collective Bargaining/Negotiations will be considered an asset.
- Demonstrated expertise in labour relations strategy, collective bargaining, and the full spectrum of grievance and arbitration processes within complex unionized environments.
- Strong knowledge of employment and labour legislation, human rights law, and related legal frameworks, preferably within public sector or highly regulated industries.

This out-of-scope role requires an experienced HR generalist who will act as a trusted consultant to management and staff, helping to foster a positive workplace culture and promote staff engagement and development.

Recruitment:
