In September of 2021, HSAA filed a policy grievance against APL following their indefensible decision to not recognize September 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, as a Named Holiday. HSAA was very disappointed that APL chose not to acknowledge this day and, believing that our collective agreement had been breached, we filed a policy grievance on your behalf.
HSAA is pleased to announce that we have reached a settlement with APL that provides compensation for those members who were eligible for a day off with pay on or for September 30, 2021, and for premium pay for hours actually worked on that day. Further, this settlement confirms that APL will treat the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, falling on September 30 of each year, as a Named Holiday on a go forward basis.
In the settlement APL commits to provide retroactive payment where applicable to current employees by pay period 16 (August 10, 2022). Employees who terminated employment with APL after September 30, 2021, will also be eligible for retroactive payment, details of that process will follow.
HSAA continues to be committed to participating in Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation process. We recognize the lost children and survivors of residential schools, along with their families and communities, and encourage all members to take time on September 30 for quiet reflection. We hope that you will take time to participate in community activities to honour the children who survived and those who did not.
