Respecting the line and supporting AUPE Auxiliary Nursing Care strike

Our colleagues in AUPE Auxiliary Nursing Care are going on strike this Saturday to stand up for respect and the conditions they need to do their work safely.

HSAA fully supports AUPE members, and there are many ways you can respect the AUPE picket line and show your support and solidarity.

There are also some important things to keep in mind as this job action unfolds.

HSAA members are required to report for scheduled shifts.

HSAA members are not in a legal position to strike and are required to report for scheduled shifts, unless there is a valid reason such as illness or scheduled time off.

Your Safety Matters
Your employer is responsible for ensuring safe access to your worksite. If crossing the line feels unsafe, contact your manager and notify your Labour Relations Officer (LRO) immediately.

Protect Your Work and Theirs
Alberta labour law states that employees cannot be disciplined for refusing to perform the duties of employees who are legally on strike. You are only required to perform your own job duties during your scheduled shifts.

If you are asked to pick up extra shifts, always ask who you are replacing and decline if it’s a striking worker.

However, if you are directed to do the work of striking employees, you may need to follow “work now, grieve later”. This means if your manager insists you do the work, you will have to comply and contact your LRO as soon as possible if you feel the request was inappropriate, or a breach of the collective agreement.

If you are unsure if the request was inappropriate or a breach, please connect with your LRO as soon as possible.

HSAA Stands with AUPE: Show Your Solidarity

HSAA encourages members to join AUPE picket lines but please do so on your own time—before or after a shift, on breaks, or on days off. When you arrive at work, consider coming early to speak with AUPE members instead of simply crossing the line.

Let them know:

  • You’re an HSAA member.
  • You stand with AUPE in solidarity.
  • You will take action if requested to do the duties of striking workers.

Spread the Word
Talk to your family and friends about why supporting AUPE matters. Stay informed through their website and online updates.

Social media amplifies solidarity. Follow their hashtags, share photos from the line, post your support, and help spread the message.
