Prairie EMS Group Grievance: Addressing Vacation Accrual Concerns

HSAA has recently become aware of potential concerns with the Employer’s application of Article 12.09(c) in instances where individuals are getting paid two times (2X) their Basic Rate of Pay on short notice moves but not accruing vacation.

The Employer’s interpretation is all hours are paid at two times (2X) their Basic Rate of Pay are classified and treated as “overtime hours” and therefore are not accruing vacation in accordance with Article 20.01.

HSAA does not agree with the Employer’s interpretation. Our position is that when you are on a short notice move, you are entitled to be compensated at two times (2X) your Basic Rate of Pay along with accruing vacation. The two times (2X) Basic Rate of Pay is a penalty for not giving 14 days' notice of the change, not “overtime hours”.

As we have been unable to resolve the concern through discussion with the Employer, HSAA is moving forward with filing a group grievance regarding this matter.

If you have been impacted by this matter and are interested in putting your name on the grievance, please send an email to sheenas@hsaa.ca with the subject line “Vacation Accrual Group Grievance” and include the following information:
