HSAA’s Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) Training Course is back this February. This full-day course occurs in-person and follows a hands-on approach, giving JWHSC worker members the skills and knowledge they need to participate meaningfully on Joint Health & Safety Committees in their workplaces.
If you are a current JHSC member, this course helps fulfill your legislated training requirements under Alberta's Occupational Health and Safety Act. It covers:
- Legal duties and responsibilities of JHSC members
- The role and responsibilities of Co-chairs
- Common committee functions such as inspections, investigations, and meeting structure
- Practical, scenario-based learning that reinforces key skills
By completing this course, you’ll also be eligible for more advanced training opportunities at future HSAA Health, Safety & Wellness Conferences.
Eligibility: this is an introductory course intended for those who are new to the role of JHWSC Worker Member and have not taken the JHSC Training Course in the most recent three years. This course is considered “Level 1” training and prepares participants for more advanced (“Level 2”) courses available at HSAA’s Health, Safety, and Wellness Conference such as Incident Investigations, Psychological Health and Safety, and Improving Committee Effectiveness. However, if you have taken this course in the last three years and would like to attend again as a refresher, please reach out to us at hsctraining@hsaa.ca.
Note that you will only be able to register for the course within your geographic eligibility area.

Why These Steps Matter
Under Alberta law, JHSC members are entitled to training and are considered to be at work while attending. HSAA covers eligible expenses in accordance with our Member Expense Policy, but we require completed documentation in advance so we can process approvals and reimbursements properly.
