As you have heard, the transfer of APL to DynaLIFEDX is being delayed until December.
Our warnings about the complexities of this transition are now being realized. This has left us all frustrated for three specific reasons: Further privatization was never needed. The high functioning laboratory system we had certainly needed upgrading, but it worked. There was no need for a complete restructuring. During this pandemic you have shown just how capable you are and how critical our labs are in keeping Albertans safe and alive. The push to change a system that demonstrated its effectiveness shows this whole decision is not based on evidence but UCP ideology—it’s purely political.
Leanne and I have said it a thousand times and we will say it ten thousand more… your values, professionalism and commitment to care for Albertans is unquestioned regardless of your employer. Years of uncertainty are leading to more uncertainty. APL and DynaLIFEDX management underestimated the complexities of implementing this transition. As the experts in the delivery of health care, HSAA has asked to be involved with the transition and we have been excluded.
Management is now throwing issues it should have already dealt with back into our union’s lap. For example, pensions. When members ask about their financial security and well-being they are being told to talk to their union. Understand, we have fought and will continue to fight for your pensions at every opportunity but we don’t know what the battle is until the details of this transition are finalized. We will continue to offer our perspective to the parties involved with the transition.
We will continue to push for more clarity for you. And we commit to you that we will pass along any information we have as quickly as possible. This is a distressing time for all of you. We know it is not easy. But know that you have 29,000 HSAA members who stand alongside you as you go through this period of uncertainty.
In Solidarity,
Mike and Leanne
