My name is Ilea Kapler, and I am a Medical Radiologic Technologist. Born and raised in Grande Prairie, I moved to McLennan after graduating from NAIT and have proudly called Northern Alberta home for the past 20 years.
Working at a very small site has given me a unique perspective on the challenges many rural and remote members face. Smaller sites can often feel overlooked by both employers and the union, but our members are just as important as those at larger centres. For the past 10 years, I have served as both Chair and Steward for my Local, advocating for members and ensuring their concerns are heard.
I have consistently stood up for small Local units, including speaking at convention against proposals that would reduce support for smaller locals or force them to merge. I strongly believe that every member deserves representation from people who understand their workplace realities, whether they work at a site with 5 members or 5,000.
That belief is what motivated me to join the AHS bargaining committee in 2020. I wanted to help ensure that all members-especially those whose voices are not always heard-have a seat at the table. I have also spent time advocating on healthcare and professional issues with both provincial and federal governments.
I am seeking a position on the Board of Directors because I want to be a strong voice for members across the North. I want to increase the visibility of HSAA, encourage greater member involvement, and ensure that members have more opportunities to engage with their union through workshops, education, and events closer to home.
Living and working in Northern Alberta, I understand the impact of staffing shortages, increasing workloads, and challenges accessing healthcare services. We see these issues every day in our workplaces and communities. I believe HSAA can continue to play an important role in bringing attention to these concerns and advocating for meaningful solutions.
