The Health Sciences Association of Alberta condemns the killing of four people and the severe injuries inflicted on a nine-year old boy, all from the same family, by a terrorist in London, Ontario.
We are saddened because the lives of four people, Salman Afzaal, Madiha Salman, Yumna Afzaal and Talat Afzaal have been ended, and another devastatingly altered because of hate.
We acknowledge that systemic racism exists in Canada and that we live amongst those in positions of power who appeal to narrow populist ideals that are fuelling ignorance and violence.
Far from simply sending “thoughts and prayers,” the favoured response of those who incite violence and hate, HSAA is taking action. At our recent annual convention, HSAA members adopted a new position statement that acknowledges systemic racism exists and societal change is needed. We condemn and oppose racism in any form.
HSAA also condemns and opposes all actions undertaken, and statements made, that further or normalize racism. HSAA advocates for inclusive communities and workplaces. All people should be able to live in any community without discrimination based on race, colour, place of origin, ancestry or shared culture.
