Executive Director

HSAA is seeking a knowledgeable and reputable professional with strong union values to lead the Union in its next chapter and play a key role in the continued implementation of the current strategic plan. Within this context HSAA invites applications and nominations for the position of Executive Director (ED).

The position:

Reporting to the Executive Officers and the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will lead the Union in its next chapter and play a key role in the continued implementation of the current strategic plan. Working closely with the Board of Directors, the Senior Management Team, staff, and membership, the ED will navigate the complexities of labour relations in Alberta’s healthcare sector. The ED will work to ensure that HSAA provides exemplary labour relations services, champions workers rights, and advocates for universal publicly funded healthcare to enhance the well-being of HSAAs member’s, the individuals they care for, and the communities they serve.

The ED will build strong, trusting, and collaborative working relationships with staff, Board Members and affiliates, and they will cultivate a professional, supportive and engaging workplace culture that promotes equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility and innovation. The ED will provide advice to the Executive Officers and the Board on operational strategies to achieve the goals of the strategic plan, as well as political strategies for action that affect HSAA members and healthcare. As the key operational leader, the ED will oversee the Union’s operations in accordance with the policies, strategic plan and operating budget established by the Board, and the Union’s values and mission. The ED will manage the Union’s resources relative to the provision of membership services including but not limited to negotiations, employer compliance with collective agreements, organizing of local units, membership disability claims, member education program, occupational health and safety, and member communications.

What you bring:

As the ideal candidate, you understand how to enable, empower, and transform organizations, and operationalize strategic initiatives. You have progressive experience in senior leadership roles, preferably within a union, not-for-profit, or similar mission driven organization. Candidates must have a commitment to publicly funded universal healthcare. You have a proven track record of operations experience, including budgeting. Experience working with and/or reporting to a Board of Directors is an asset. You demonstrate commitment to labour movement values, have deep knowledge of labour relations principles and practices, and are capable of championing HSAA’s core values and vision. You can navigate complex political environments, understand the dynamics around the relationship between employer bodies, government bodies, and the Union, and are comfortable advocating for and representing the interests of healthcare professionals. As a leader, you build and foster an open and collaborative workplace culture and have demonstrated experience promoting and advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. Your communication skills inspire trust, allowing you to build and sustain strong relationships with colleagues and allies at all levels and advance effective communication pathways. You are committed to the highest standards of honesty, transparency, and ethics. You have proven change management experience, with the ability to establish goals, develop implementation plans, monitor progress and ensure effective accountability and strategic alignment. A post-secondary degree is an asset.

Summer Student - Temporary Events Planner (Full-Time)

HSAA is looking for four (4) full-time summer students to help with event planning this summer as HSAA tours worksites and communities across Alberta. In this position, you will work out of the Edmonton office and will report to the Manager, Education & Events. This is a temporary position up to 4 months ending on or before August 30, 2024.

We are looking for four (4) full-time Summer Students to help with event planning this summer as HSAA tours worksites and communities across Alberta. In this position, you will work out of the Edmonton office and will report to the Manager, Education & Events. This is a temporary position up to 4 months ending on or before August 30, 2024. This in-scope position will be responsible for, but not limited to: 

  • Planning and hosting events that enhance HSAA’s image, improves member loyalty, and supports member experience at internal and external events.
  • Researching and securing venues, coordinating event activities and logistics, negotiating quotes and agreements with vendors, monitoring timeframes and budgets, networking, and delivering on event objectives.
  • Travelling to all events within Alberta to act as on-site coordinator of the event and planned activities.
  • Developing and distributing promotional materials such as emails, social media and posters for events.

What you bring:

  • Enrolled in a post-secondary program working towards obtaining a degree or diploma in a related field, such as event management, hospitality management, or business, as well as one year of event planning experience. Equivalent education and work experience in fields related to will be considered.
  • You are energetic, creative and a problem solver who understands the importance of brand recognition and meaningful event experience.
  • You possess excellent communication skills, with a strong ability to coordinate multiple events while maintaining exceptional relationships with stakeholders.
  • You approach event management with professionalism with your exceptional customer service ethic and high expectations for quality.
  • You prioritize your work and excel in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. You share the core values of HSAA and believe in the value that unions bring to workers.
  • You can manage your time effectively but occasionally work outside of regular business hours with the ability to travel throughout Alberta, as required. You possess a valid driver’s license and have access to a vehicle.

The position:

We are looking for two (2) temporary full-time Summer Students who are passionate about helping to create positive change that will work out of the Edmonton office reporting to the Director, Labour Relations. This in-scope position is responsible for carrying out administrative activities that support HSAA Constitution, Bylaws, Resolutions, & Policies. This position will perform a variety of complex and confidential functions to support labor relations activities. Duties will include but not limited to:

  • Review and edit documents related to HSAA’s Constitution, Bylaws, Resolutions and Policies (CBRP) for clarity and consistency.
  • Format the CBRP according to established guides and templates, ensuring consistent presentation across all materials by adjusting layouts, headings and others as needed to ensure readability and professional outlook.
  • Coordinate with departments to incorporate necessary updates and or amendments to the CBRP.
  • Maintain version control by ensuring all changes are correctly reflected on final versions of documents and maintain track changes for historical accuracy.
  • Maintain organized electronic and or physical records of all updated versions of documents in compliance with HSAA’s policies regarding document retention and security.
  • Conduct research as necessary to ensure that updates to documents align with current laws, regulations and best practices.
  • Other assigned general administrative duties.

What you bring:

  • Enrolled in a post-secondary program working towards obtaining a degree or diploma in a related field, such as Administrative Assistant or Business Administration.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in an office environment
  • Strong administrative skills and experience
  • Demonstrated ability to perform a wide variety of administrative duties
  • Ability to work independently within a team-based environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate tactfully, courteously, and clearly whether verbally or in writing.
  • Must be dependable and hardworking
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to carry out tasks with minimal supervision
  • Experience in an unionized environment is desirable

Administrative Assistant I, Labour Relations (1 Full-Time, Temporary Position)

This in-scope position is responsible for providing direct support to the various LR and Leadership teams, as well as, administrative assistance related to collective agreement administration, grievance filing, and bargaining. The incumbent will perform a variety of complex and confidential functions to support Labour relations activities.

The incumbent will perform a variety of complex and confidential functions to support Labour relations activities.

What you bring:

  • A post-secondary degree, diploma, in a related field, such as business, office administration, legal assistant/paralegal.
  • Experience in an administrative role. Equivalent education and work experience will be considered.
  • Energetic, self-motivated, and organized individual with the ability to support and work collaboratively with many different stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work and excel in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

  • Familiarity with organized union structures.
  • Knowledge of the current health care system in Alberta.
  • Skilled at editing and formatting content utilizing Adobe and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with email software, databases, and electronic document management systems, preferably, Unionware. Intermediate proficiency with MS Office Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
