Albertans will vote in a provincial referendum on October 19, 2026. HSAA encourages all eligible members to become informed about the referendum questions and to exercise their democratic right to vote.
As a non-partisan organization, HSAA does not support or endorse political parties. However, we do take positions on public policy issues when we believe they may affect our members, public health care, patients, or the communities we serve.
Following careful consideration, HSAA's Board of Directors unanimously voted to support Alberta remaining in Canada. The Board believes remaining in Canada is the best way to protect and strengthen public health care and the services Albertans rely on every day. This position reflects the Board's assessment of the potential impacts of the referendum on the health-care system and the people who work within it.
At the same time, HSAA recognizes that members hold a wide range of views on the referendum questions. Our goal is to support members in making informed decisions based on credible information and thoughtful consideration of the issues.
We encourage members to:
- Review the referendum questions carefully.
- Seek information from diverse and credible sources.
- Consider the potential impacts on patients, communities, public services, and the health-care system.
- Participate in democratic process by casting a ballot.
As health-care professionals, we understand the importance of evidence, facts, and informed decision-making. We encourage all Albertans to approach the referendum with the same commitment. Whatever your perspective, we encourage you to take the time to learn about the issues and ensure your voice is heard.
